Five Ways To Survive Winter in Philly

It’s safe to say winter is among us. Last night was our first snowfall, finally! But that doesn’t mean we all have to go into hibernation, no matter how tempting that sounds. There are so many fun things to do in Philly this season that you definitely do not want to miss out on! Here's five tips I've come up with to help all my fellow Philadelphians not only survive, but enjoy the winter weather.

1. Ice Skating on the Delaware!

What says winter more than ice-skating? I’m no good at it, but it is still a fun time no matter what. Whether for a date night or with a group of friends, head on down to the waterfront for a fun night with a great view of the Ben Franklin Bridge and the Delaware River.

2. Dress the part

Some days when the wind-chill is below zero, I know how hard it can be to get dressed and look stylish. But that doesn’t have to be the case this year! Winter style can be super fun to play around with because there are so many layering options! There are so many great local designers who have the cure to surviving the winter. One of my personal favorites is Thread Society, an up and coming Philly brand. They have plenty of warm options to get your through the cold. I personally love this hockey lace up hoodie. It adds a fashionable element to an otherwise simple hoodie, so you’re cute, comfy, and warm. The club jacket is another must have for the season. It reminds me a bit of a varsity jacket and is a staple street wear piece. You can stay cozy all day with a colorful swing top, or throw it on over a spicy body suit and hit the city for a night out.

3. Down the rabbit hole at the Rosenbach

I feel like there has to be some people here who resonate with me on this. I’m obsessed with Alice in Wonderland. I have an old copy that I’ve read at least five times. The Rosenbach is a museum and library in Philadelphia that is holding an event for the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s infamous book. The exhibit goes until May 15 and displays their collection of Carroll’s books, letters, and rare photos to show you the stories behind the actual story.

4. Dance to some local music

The music scene in Philly is alive. No matter what the weather, you can guarantee on a weekend night there will be an awesome band to go see. And is there a more fun way to stay warm than dancing to a live band with some friends!? If you like large arena concerts, Wells Fargo is hosting Jersey native Bruce Springsteen and Muse within the next few weeks. For something less expensive but still a big show, the Disco Biscuits straight out of Philly are at the FIllmore on February 6. An awesome local band, Blendmode will be playing an afterparty for the Biscuits on Saturday at the Kung Fu Necktie just a few blocks away.  For smaller more intimate shows, Lettuce will throw down the funk at the TLA and Escort plays one of my personal favorite venues, Underground Arts, all within the next few weeks!

5. Stay in & stay warm

You can stay in the warmth of your own home while still being productive! Start your own blog or find some new favorites to read. Winter is also my favorite time to shop online, there are usually a ton of sales! I find it hard to go shopping in the winter when you are all bundled up and have to take off a zillion layers just to try on a top. The best part of shopping online from the comfort of your couch is being able to snuggle up to your pets with the fire on. Nothing beats it!
